We had a guest this month from Chicago, who joined Jeff on a trip to the flanks of Makushin Volcano, followed by a paddling trip along the Bering Sea Coast. Photos by Jeff Hancock and Steven Franklin.

Akun Paddling Expedition

Makushin Bay Kayaking

Makushin Bay, a large inlet on the west side of Unalaska reaches deeply inland to nearly bisect the island. The inlet pre-historically contained many inhabited sites where evidence of indigenous residents and their subsistence fishing still remain today. Unangas living at Makushin village in the 1940s were evacuated to southeast Alaska during World War II military operations in the Aleutians. None were able to return.
