The Aleutian Islands offer superb camping opportunities. Trail heads near town can get you off the beaten path in less than two hours. A short boat ride will bring you to bays and islands farther afield. We've listed a few of our favorite camping destinations, contact us to create a trip custom-made for you and your group!
Agamgik Bay
A brief hike brings you to a popular camping destination within Beaver Inlet. This sheltered bay is a great place to watch wildlife and enjoy an Aleutian camping experience. Can also be partnered with a hike to English Bay and an overnight there, before returning to Unalaska.
English Bay
It's a 5 hour hike to English Bay, a one hour boat ride, or a 8 hour kayak trip. Once you're there, the options are endless. You can meander along the route of Captain James Cook as he made his first landfall in the Aleutians at English Bay. Among the house-pits of an abandoned Unangan village site, watch the spectacular currents in the waters where the Bering Sea meets the Pacific Ocean, or enjoy abundant Aleutian wildlife, including sea otters and birds.
Nateekin Bay
A boat ride across Unalaska Bay brings you to the lovely Nateekin Bay. This is a quiet spot away from the lights of town, surrounded by seabird cliffs. A thriving salmon stream runs up the middle of Nateekin Bay. This can be a great place for fishing, or to sit and watch whales in the summer months.
Beaver Inlet Kayak Camping
A two hour hike into Beaver Inlet, North of Unalaska Bay, followed by several days of paddling in protected waters. The Aleutians offer a rich habitat for seabirds and marine mammals; past paddling trips in Beaver Inlet have brought us close to Humpback Whales, rafts of sea otters, Steller's sea lions, and countless bird species.
Makushin Bay Kayak Camping
A four hour hike into Makushin Bay, South of Unalaska Bay, followed by several days of paddling in protected waters. The Aleutians offer a rich habitat for seabirds and marine mammals; past paddling trips in Makushing Bay have brought us close to Humpback Whales, rafts of sea otters, Steller's sea lions, and countless bird species.
